Over the years we have had many firsts.  Today, OSI Maritime Systems is a leading provider of integrated navigation and tactical solutions designed for naval and maritime security operations. Among those solutions, the company develops and delivers integrated bridge systems for warships, integrated dived navigation systems for submarines, and C2 systems for small craft. Presently, 23 navies totaling more than 600 warships and submarines operate using OSI systems.

Due to the nature of our company, all employees must pass specific security criteria. Only candidates who are Canadian citizens, have PR status or have a citizenship from a NATO country, and who satisfy security clearance criteria, will be considered.

The Job


The Technical Writer is primarily responsible for the development, authoring and publishing of OSI’s Customer deliverable Technical Manuals, such as, Integrated Navigation Bridge System (INBS) technical manuals.
 
The Technical Writer will collect inputs from and collaborate with various subject matter experts (SME) to author and organize technical content related to the operation, troubleshooting and maintenance of the system. The Technical Writer will also manage technical content within a centralized database and ensure that content is up to date and consistent with system design changes. The Technical Writer will execute quality assurance verifications before publishing the technical manuals in compliance with contract requirements or internal OSI requirement.


The main responsibilities are:
  • Produce and release technical documentation for various OSI products including; end-user operator guides, technical manuals, and internal publications.
  • Publish in PDF and web-based Help formats.
  • Ensure that product documentation is produced and published in a timely manner and adheres to OSI’s style guidelines and standards of accuracy, thoroughness, readability, usefulness, consistency, and organization.
  • Research product information based on input from subject matter experts, using beta products, engineering specifications, and engineering design documents.
  • Prepare Document Plans and Document Trees to support the technical communication needs for the software release and project documentation.
  • Maintain an ongoing comprehensive understanding of the product from an operational and user experience perspective.
  • Attend and/or organize meetings with sales, engineering, and other departments to gain an understanding of the information needs of the user, to clarify technical issues and obtain information.
  • Manage document review artifacts and approvals for auditing purposes.
  • Develop and publish templates that are consistent with the OSI corporate and department requirements.
  • Adhere to company-agreed technical documentation standards.
  • Ensure skill set is up to date with developments and trends in the industry, through Professional Development plans and attending training courses, as necessary.
  • Follow current OSI Technical Writer’s processes and procedures, including adhering to the writing style conventions, and utilizing existing checklists and templates.
  • Recommend improvements and implement new standards in technical communication, as needed.
  • Understand document management and configuration control of documents and adheres to company processes.
  • Provide technical communications assistance to other departments such as Proposals, Engineering, and Project Management.
  • Provide technical assistance on techniques using Word, Excel, Power Point and other specialized software.
  • Participate in client and internal audits.

You Bring

Education:
  • Post-secondary education, and/or certificate in technical writing, and/or relevant working experience.
  • Training in current electronic publishing tools and Microsoft Office products. 
Experience and Skills:
  • Three years of technical writing for high-technology products or services.
  • Minimum of one year of responsibility for publishing print or electronic media (HTML, PDF).
  • Experience in the technical communication of software projects in engineering.
  • Clear, concise writing and editing skills.
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Word and Excel is essential.
  • Experience with Visio, Adobe FrameMaker, WebWorks ePublisher, MadCap Flare, and Jira is an asset.
  • Thorough knowledge of Windows-based computer and network use.
  • Ability to understand and work with complex systems and software is necessary.
  • Ability to analyze substantial amounts of complex material, discern key information, and present in manner best understood by target audience.
  • Ability to formulate questions to gain understanding, capture necessary information, and ask appropriate follow-up questions.
  • Excellent organizational skills; attention to detail and consistency.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to deliver assigned work on time and to be flexible.
  • Demonstrates Professionalism.
  • Ability to learn quickly and work well under pressure in a high paced, challenging environment.
  • Ability to self-manage, prioritizing work, seeing the gaps of work that need to be done with little direction.
  • Knowledge of marine navigation concepts and systems is an asset.
